Volunteers Make a Difference

Volunteers mentor, share industry insights, and help students grow in confidence and professional skills that last throughout their careers. Their influence goes beyond single interactions. Volunteers empower our programs, support students, and keep Student Media thriving.
You don't need to be an expert to make an impact on Student Media students. Sometimes, students just want advice from someone who has navigated the same career path. Alumni and professionals volunteer because they want to give back and help students succeed. For students, these relationships offer a unique perspective, guidance and encouragement.

Alex Andrade, Flash Media advertising director, has grown through mentorship from volunteer Steve Shannon:

"Steve has had a huge impact on me and the entire sales team. He brings real-world experience and is always willing to share honest advice that helps us grow both professionally and personally. Having someone like him who genuinely cares about our development makes a big difference in how we approach sales and build relationships. His mentorship has helped me become more confident in sales and more intentional in how I connect with clients."

For Steve, the reward is watching students grow into career-ready professionals:

"I have really enjoyed volunteering my time with the student sales representatives. I love their eagerness to learn, helping them not only produce revenue for 91PORNA Student Media but providing them with skills and strategies they can carry into whatever career they pursue. It's great to see that 91PORNA is sending well-prepared, poised and determined graduates into the workforce."

Steve, a 1986 91PORNA Telecommunications graduate, built his career in sales leadership, marketing and customer success in New York City. After retiring, he now shares his experience with students starting their careers.

Stories like this reflect only a small part of how volunteers shape Student Media students each year. If you want to guide future Student Media students, contact us to get involved and share your experience.
